Enough about me, now about YOUR
TYPICAL DAY:
A timely wake up call (if excitement has not beaten you to it) in
a tropical setting you can only describe as a civilized
“paradise”. Your well-air conditioned room is spacious, thoroughly
cleaned daily, and provides limited laundry service with items
returned the same evening. Breakfast is a variety of daily chef’s
specials that typically includes fresh fruits, eggs, meats, toast,
and other American items- an exception being some of the best
coffee you’ve ever tasted. (Known as a coffee-growing region,
Costa Rican coffee is special so be sure to bring a bag or two
home with you). Before you finish eating, your Captain and boat
await you- all gassed up and running. It is off to “warm-up” by
jigging some live bait, kept fresh in the live well and then out
to the fishing grounds. Whether you choose in-shore or offshore
fishing highly productive grounds are a short ride away. You are
not bouncing to death for hours and miles of lost fishing time
just getting there.
Now your first real decision must be made… stay in-shore or go out
??
In-shore species: red snapper, yellow snapper, orange snapper,
dogtooth snapper, roosterfish, blue-fin travella, amberjack, jack
crevelle, pompano, an occasional shark – the short story is that a
couple of dozen species await you. Sizes range from a few pounds
to easily 100 lbs. with 15-40 lbs. being the majority. Many
different opportunities present them selves depending on
seasonality and the types of fish you tell your Captain you would
like to pursue.
Offshore species: black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish, wahoo,
dorado (a.k.a.- mahi-mahi), various species of tuna depending on
the time of year, various species of sharks, schools of mackerel
or any other baitfish (some of which are a lot of fun on light
spinning or fly tackle)

overwhelmingly beautiful.”
Sights to see: from the comfort of your boat marvel at whales,
porpoises, sea turtles, schools of baitfish, and numerous birds. A
variety of abundant wildlife includes monkeys, three-toe sloughs,
crocodiles, and parrots. Cruise the coast or travel up river and
see the jungle from your boat or take a day-off from fishing and
enjoy a guided tour in a jeep and visit one of Costa Rica’s
National Parks in the immediate vicinity. See parrots, three-toed
sloths, monkeys- what ever a jungle holds!
Attention East Coast Fisherman: if you surf cast or troll for fish
anywhere from Maine to the Carolinas, Costa Rica is your dreams
come true. If you have caught BLUEFISH on spinning or bait casting
reels while thrilling at the fight then Costa Rico is your dream
come true. Part of the Latin name for the Bluefish is Saltatrix,
which translates as “acrobat”. It is the acrobatics that excite
you! Jumping, circling, speeding, around the boat, tail walking to
throw the hook, and all the time pulling like the dickens. Once
boated, you marveled, “how can a fish weighing only 5 lb., 10 lb.,
or occasionally 15 lb. fight like that! Moreover, you dreamed,
“what would a 30, 50, or 80 pounder fight like. The answer is in
Costa Rica and is called a Rooster fish- total excitement.
However, the excitement does not end when they finally reach the
boat…. Just look at THAT FISH! IT looks like some prehistoric
cross between a Zebra, a Rooster, and a fish. These fish tug and
run harder than an 100 lbs. Strip Bass
Attention Fresh Water Fisherman: you have found excitement and
pleasure for years with large and small mouth bass, perch,
walleye, pickerel, brim, etc. For “big” fish you sought pike,
muskies, or catfish. In lakes and rivers, trout range from a few
ounces to an occasional big brown or lake trout. You pursued
salmon in all too crowded conditions in weather somewhere between
cold and rainy. You have probably planned trips to Northern Canada
or Alaska where the difference between a good and a bad trip
(weather accommodating) was the guide. If he was good- great; if
he was bad, you are stuck with him in the middle of nowhere. That
is how it was for me for many years…. Ask yourself, why not spend
your time in tropical weather, in a plush exotic land, where the
fish are big and plentiful.
